Exercise yourself for godliness
1 Timothy 4:7-8
…On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; 8 for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Philippians 2:12-13
12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Spiritual exercise is necessary for spiritual growth. Like a muscle, our faith grows as we exercise and train ourselves spiritually. From beginning to end this is a discipline of grace. We are saved by grace and we grow in Christ by grace. The grace that saves us in Christ is expressed through our lives as we work out what God works in. Our thoughts, actions and habits need to be proactive expressions of God’s grace. We are to discipline ourselves to rely upon the Holy Spirit and obey the commands of Scripture. We are to practice spiritual disciplines that connect us to and grow within us the resurrection life of Jesus Christ. We grow spiritually as we exercise ourselves for godliness.
